Roman Toyi’s Emotional Prelude: Session 001 EP Review

Life is a mix of highs and lows, full of different experiences and emotions. It’s about finding our way through both the good times and the tough moments, learning and growing along the way.

Session 001,” Roman Toyi‘s most recent release, is a carefully constructed two-track EP that offers a profound and perceptive look into the intricacies of life, with a special emphasis on themes of loss and resiliency. This project, which includes the strong and moving songs “Stones” and “Bardo,” is both thoughtful and emotionally charged, letting listeners to consider their own experiences and convey the real and unadulterated feelings that come with facing life’s most difficult situations.

The first song, “Stones,” was co-produced and performed by Vny. and Obie Iyoha establishes a powerful tone. The lyrics and flow are highlighted by the subdued production. Smooth and forceful rapping addresses the theme of gaining strength throughout trying times in this track. I’d say the simplicity of the beat doesn’t hold back the talent on display—if anything, it enhances it, proving that sometimes, less is more.

On the other hand, “Bardo” shifts the focus to the theme of grief. Inspired by personal losses, including the death of Xain’s grandmother and a close friend, the song conveys the profound pain and sorrow that come with such experiences. It opens with an ambient intro that feels interesting, fresh, and different, creating a mood that’s both somber and reflective. The production and flow on this track stand out, offering a distinct contrast to “Stones” and adding depth to the EP.

Session 001 is a deeply reflective release that serves as the first chapter in a planned trilogy centered on themes of healing and mental well-being. This EP not only introduces listeners to the emotional and introspective journey Roman is starting but also offers subtle hints about his upcoming project, “Color Therapy.” Building on the foundation established by his 2023 work, “Hearing Colors,” this EP, though brief in length, packs a powerful punch and sets the stage for what promises to be a meaningful and impactful continuation of his musical exploration.
