Sometimes, all you need is a catchy, eerie little tune to get Halloween started. You know, the kind that’s delightfully unsettling but you can’t stop yourself from listening to? You might find that exact same music in The Burton D’Agostini Procedure’s latest release, “Strange Condition”.
Behind this project is a US-based duo, Jeff Burton and John D’Agostini. Two seasoned musicians who have supported several touring bands over the years, with influences spanning from ’60s psychedelia to modern alternative, might just be the perfect pair to create something as peculiar as it is infectious.
For a song titled Strange Condition, this one lives up to its name from the intro itself. Think of a heart monitor beeping in a dimly lit hospital room, except it feels a little sinister. Then come the layers one by one, and you’re thrown into a disorienting case that begins with “I woke up with a fever and a pounding in my brain.” The vocals have this gruff, detached delivery that just makes you picture Frankenstein’s monster casually explaining why he can’t feel his feet.
The real treat, though, is beyond its bizarre premise. It manages to create an atmosphere that commits to peculiarity and playful eeriness without losing its musicality. There’s just enough character in the track itself that it will do more than just complement your Halloween playlist.
As the track ends, you might not know exactly what is going on with Strange Condition, but you’ll probably find yourself hitting replay and humming it longer.
