George Styles’ “How Will I Ever Know” Sounds Like It Still Hurts

There’s something so different about hearing grief sung by someone who has lived long enough to know it doesn’t always leave. It just sits there, still, until you’re left asking questions like, “How will I ever know?”

George Styles is back with How Will I Ever Know, along with a 25-year history embedded in its production after reuniting with drummer Tommy Street. What began as a moment of creative stagnation eventually found its footing in a cinematic, alternative rock sound.

The guitar starts slow, almost subdued, while Styles sings “I could not eat, and I could not sleep,” and for an opening, it feels painfully honest. It’s bare, trading all the bravado and polish for something much more vulnerable and deep.

The imagery is simple, but Styles knows exactly how to make it linger. The plainspoken quality to his writing makes heavier moments feel more familiar and relatable—the darkness, the endless sea, and the helplessness of wanting someone to stay.

The last minute of the track is where it actually gains some momentum, as the layers finally reveal themselves and the question begins repeating until the words almost lose their meaning. And that’s probably why How Will I Ever Know stands out. Grief here isn’t overly poetic or theatrical; it just is. And Styles makes it sound so real that for three minutes, you forget the feeling was never yours to begin with.
