Jennifer Harper’s “Soul Alive” Motivates You To Become Something More

Songs are deemed to be something to relate to, we respect that. They have to get you, in a sense that they would be that friend who cries with you, throws rocks with you, pounds on the walls with you. But sometimes, music has to be the mediator, or the one that makes you want to move on and move forward. “Soul Alive” is one of those albums. Each track within this record seems to have their own flavor of mellow folk and mellow music in general.

Originally from Washington, D.C., singer-songwriter Jennifer Harper gives it her all in everything she does, from raising a family, thriving through recreational hobbies, to what seems to be her life’s mission of being a healer, a guide, and a visionary artist. Her perception of life and her goal as an artist shape the way she makes music, claiming that her concerts are not just what they are, they’re also spaces for growth and immersion.

Change Is Coming” is similar to a chant, as it has its repetitive parts which enhances the song’s message by a ton. The buildup is seamless, calm, and makes listeners feel hopeful especially with the lines “you will be fine, you will be fine”. It allows them to move themselves forward. Essentially, this song is a great start for this album; it’s multilayered, something that’s perfect for an ensemble, an orchestra, or an acapella group just by the variety of harmonies present.

Immediately, you would think of a lullaby when you hear “Remembrance”. It’s a song so intricate that it has the capability of lulling anyone to sleep. The vocals are powerful and comforting, and the instrumentals match really well with the melody. Additionally, the lyrics seem to be speaking to the self and the listener at the same time, encouraging them to let go and rest with soft, fluffy words and lyrics. This song serves as a reminder to those who push themselves too hard that it’s okay to lay low and reset for a while.

Like a matchlit flame, “Soul Alive”, the title track, has that subtly, snappy start to it. A catchy rhythm that goes well with the equally energetic vocals. The upbeat consistency is bound to empower anyone and get them nodding along to the beat. As the song progresses, the energy just gets more lively and contagious. It’s a beautifully arranged track that does justice in defining the record as a whole.

Speaking of beautiful, “Beautiful Earth” is an ambience-driven song, with the harmonies and overall vocals taking the audience to a place of solace and peace. It’s exactly what you’d expect when you think about romanticizing the planet we live in. Through this song, audiences get to envision the Earth in its most peaceful form, brought to them by their own imagination and interpretation of the song.

Floating”, just from the first few seconds, can already be deemed as a song that’s bound to be enjoyed by most people. It’s reminiscent of 90s classics, or even older, that provide a sense of nostalgia. It’s a product of a combination of such songs plus Harper’s talent of incorporating harmonies in certain spots, not to mention her expertise in creating a calm soundscape.

The last track, “Butterfly”, pulls listeners in with the delivery of the opening lines: “what is the key to your heart?” This song seemingly binds everything you’ve just heard from the album, by the endless lines that emit a strong sense of togetherness and harmony. At its core, it’s motivating, encouraging, as if all your mistakes and doubts have been erased, as if your very being has been validated and will continue to be validated for a long time. It’s such a pure song, that you would never want it to end.

Overall, if you need something that’s not overpowering in a literal sense but rather something that empowers you internally, this is the album for you. “Soul Alive” is soft, and it treads lightly within the borderline of being powerful and comforting. These songs deserve a spot on your sleep and self-esteem playlists.
