There’s something so refreshing about hearing a musician in his fifties write about infatuation without pretending he’s got everything figured out. In Think Yer In Luv, Joe Rian keeps it real: falling for someone isn’t usually dramatic—it’s repetitive. And that’s what makes it funny, a little pathetic, and definitely relatable.
Joe Rian found his way in Chicago’s indie-rock scene, but his music still carries the timeless influence of Kenny Rogers and Tanya Tucker from his upbringing in small-town Illinois. He’s now back with Think Yer In Luv, bottling up butterflies, overthinking, and the excitement of a new romance into a feel-good anthem.
Think Yer In Luv starts off strong with guitars that will make you want to jump with excitement. It’s bright, jangly, the kind of sound you’d hear on a lazy Sunday afternoon while your dad’s holed up in the garage. That same handmade, DIY energy also manifests in his official animated video, where every character was hand-drawn, cut out, and painstakingly brought to life frame by frame.
What you’ll get from this track isn’t romance shot on a cinematic fairytale about love; Rian traces the tiny, laughable, sometimes embarrassing moments that come with catching feelings. The best part? He writes it with fuzz and a grin on his face without ever feeling pessimistic or mean-spirited. To think that this might be a spoiler to his upcoming album, then it’s safe to say that he’s really onto something special.
At its core, Think Yer In Luv feels like an older brother telling you, “Oh, look at you. You think you’re in love already.” And no matter how much you hate him saying it, you can’t help but laugh because you know deep down, he’s definitely right.
