Cyberstalking can sound good with electric, glitchy guitar work. And it shouldn’t even make sense, but One Empty Toybox pulls it off so well you’d forget it’s indeed about something as serious as cyberstalking.
One Empty Toybox is built around friendship, creativity, and the kind of welcoming spaces where weird ideas can actually breathe. At its core are Rob Dreyer and Nicholas “Nick” Viltrakis, who have been making and recording music together since 1995. They return with Cyberstalking, donating all profits to Stop Stalking Us.
The band isn’t interested in lengthy intros; they just get right into it with bright, quirky layers that might deceive you into thinking this is just an ordinary love song. The sound gives off a pixelated, arcade-like edge, which feels oddly perfect for a song about online obsession.
The lyrics deserve some credit for keeping the song light without making the subject feel like a joke. It’s pretty playful to repeat “modern star-crossed lovers”, especially when you remember what the song is actually about. You’d get no complicated, overly poetic lyrics here, just lines that are catchy on the surface but become unsettling the more it repeats.
You just gotta love it when bands aren’t confined to overused themes. And for a song about cyberstalking, One Empty Toybox proves that even the strangest ideas can make a damn good song.
