I have always been a fan of live performances—it’s lively, it’s fun, yet the whole concept of it is terrifying in the shoes of a performer—you have to be fun, but at the same time, more importantly, you have to be great. But with Lí-Lí Octave, live performances are no problem; she transforms into a goddess on stage, singing and hitting satisfying notes here and there, as showcased in her latest release, “Play On Venus (Live).” With full emphasis on the word LIVE, this 10-track album is a collection of ten great and soulful performances from Lí-Lí as she goes around singing beautiful melodies on stage, singing songs about women—the stories, the situations, and the everyday experiences.
It starts strong with the rich and sultry sound brought by the track “Wait (For Your Love).” From the get-go, you will be welcomed by Lí-Lí’s strong vocal skills as she easily and satisfyingly hits one note to another and sings tales of a relationship that has lost its warmth and connection. It is a chill and sexy start for the album, yet a powerful introduction to the collection. “Lay It Down” soon follows with its steammmy mood! Have you ever heard of the hit song Earned It? That is the vibe. There’s nothing hotter than a woman who knows what she wants—this track is beautiful, confident, and sexy.
“Out of Place” is another original from Lí-Lí, a song dedicated to all the relationships that have failed because of two people living in different worlds. This song hits close to home as the song speaks about the untold words and stories from the woman’s perspective in this relationship. It is somehow a bittersweet track as it tells a story of a love that is so strong yet there’s power in the acceptance that the love is out of place.
Now, “You Scared” is particularly curious in my personal opinion. The way the story of this track is laid down is very artistic and particularly clever, as it shows a situation of how women and their instincts could be the reason why some men get scared if they do something bad, such as cheating. It implies how men get scared of being discovered for the things that they do and how men get scared of the repercussions of their actions. Yet, surprise, the story does not end the way you thought it should end. What a great plot twist!
Lí-Lí Octave also released “Grandma’s Kitchen,” “Work of Art,” “Get Off Me,” and “Mind Your GD Business” in this collection. Through these tracks, Lí-Lí managed to capture the hearts of the listeners through her fun personality and great vocal prowess. In “Struggling,” the artist sings about the reality of being torn between hardships women face in life. It also emphasizes the fact that there are no delete buttons or backspaces in life, so one should always say what they mean and mean what they say. But then again, as the song progresses, Lí-Lí also manages to showcase the difficulty of making decisions toward situations since sometimes fear hinders the clarity of mind in making good ones.
Finally, the track “Top of the World” closes the whole collection. It is an intense and enjoyable track that will make you groove. It is an empowering song that serves as a validation of the life of a woman through the positive messages that it carries throughout the track. It is a great way to end the collection, as lines like I’m a diamond and I’m at the top of the world fully emphasize the possibilities and the heights that women can reach.
Ultimately, “Play on Venus (Live) Album” by Lí-Lí Octave is a great collection. It is a must-listen! You see, I can’t get over the amount of confidence that this collection has. First off, it is a live album; hence, the whole recording for this is challenging—no additional whatnots or edits that can be done through studios, just pure talent and skills by Lí-Lí. Second, the vocals—it’s high caliber; you can’t even contest this fact. There’s no denying how great her vocals are—it is soulful, it is sexy, and at the same time it is rich! More importantly, her range is crazy! Finally, in terms of instrumentation and structure of each track, it is top-notch. You can hear how skilled the band is and, at the same time, how they are enjoying themselves while doing their jam. The songs were also well-structured and written in a way that messages and stories were easily conveyed.
Lí-Lí Octave is the main star here. She is a total package—personality-wise, vocal-wise, performance-wise; she’s everything. She’s so fun and confident with her skills. She’s not afraid to hit those high notes live! The stage is her playground. The sheer skill, talent, and positivity delivered on this release are paramount, and you wouldn’t want to miss it.
