Some songs definitely need more cliché and hopeless yearning. Thankfully, Bailey Grey isn’t afraid of either, giving you something that is straight out of a fairytale rom-com in 2000s.
Bailey Grey, hailing from New Jersey, is an artist known for her captivating blend of indie, jazz, rock, folk, and alternative influences. She’s now back with Unfortunately (I’m in Love with You), an indie pop track with a twist on a classic fairytale.
The track started off with bright guitars and an upbeat rhythm section, radiating that carefree and youthful sound before its lovesick lyrics takeover. Nostalgia doesn’t end with its instrumentation because Grey herself also carries that same charm with her strong and expressive vocals.
Lyrically, you won’t get some clever, complex wordplay. She fully commits to fairytale references and romantic clichés that’s embarrassingly earnest, but that’s exactly what makes it work. She asks for one last dance, wonders if midnight means she’s run out of time, without ever trying to outsmart and intellectualize their feelings. Grey simply embraces the mess of loving someone without overexplaining it.
The best thing about Unfortunately (I’m in Love with You) is having that familiar romantic trope without being predictable. It’s genuine, honest, the kind of track you’d play on repeat when you want to romanticize your own life for four minutes straight.
