90 Beats per Minute is Cherry Makes Waves’s sophomore EP to date and to just spice things up, this 5 track EP is situated at 90 BPM making it a feat that no other artists would dare to do.
Starting this EP off, we have Spaceman which is true to its title, started with this spacy feel. The addition of the synth keyboard line in the later part of the track created this interesting character to the overall gist of the song making it a great intro for this EP giving the listeners this “welcome’ feel.
The second track of the EP, Phaeton gave us this dark and edgy feel which goes hand in hand with the main hook of the song. I know who you are and who you are not. The distorted vocals in the bridge/chorus part of the track created a great opening for that short but face-melting guitar solo that is perfect for the song and its main theme.
BIG LEAGUE started with an in-your-face synth keyboard line that worked perfectly with the short slap bass solo in the latter part of the verse. The song talks about people who take advantage of others and the main hook of the song is screaming I’m in the big league now and those things are beneath me which works hand in hand with the overall feel of the track.
Home takes us to a magical place of solemnity and calmness. The track gave us this slow and mellow vibe at the beginning but as the song progresses, it gets heavier and heavier which aligns perfectly with the overall lyrics. The feeling of being wanted so badly.
And lastly, 90 Beats Per Minute which is the same name as the EP, gave us this World Music influence. The percussive instrumentation alongside the humming background created this divinely nature kind of vibe. Inserting the synth bass hook on the chorus added another layer of authenticity to the song. The main hook of the song is telling us that all we need is love. The layered harmonic vocals at the end of the song is just magical making this the perfect fit to end the EP.
Cherry Makes Waves wowed me in ways I can’t even imagine. Her eclectic style and vast influence are easily comprehended in this track. This EP clearly shows her creative and distinct sound. Making it an experience like no other.
