Nothing really beats music that has been tested through time, as proven by the music of Steve Alex, who’s also known as Never Heavy, as he releases his second album entitled Never Heavy is One Full of Light. This most anticipated project follows his debut as a solo artist in 2022 with his self-titled debut captivating us with his great songwriting and singing. With his catchy melodies, chill and calm performance, as well as his introspective lyrics, this collection has been breathed into life.
Opening this collection is the track “Bottle the Sun,” packed with the signature sound of Alex’s guitar and emotional singing. The simple structure of the track sets the tone for the whole project. “On the Go” continues the fun with its slow and introspective type of sound and lyrics. This track works to connect deeply with the audience with lines that depict hope in between struggles through the help of someone and a realization depicted through the line, “I need to work my way back to you.” Which made the whole piece stand out because of this impression.
“Anything More” features a rich-sounding guitar on its opening chords as its lyrics ask the question, “How do you know when you’re right? How do you know when you’re wrong? ” That depicts the internal struggle of the unknown. This track is perfect for your background music for your late-night time with yourself, where it’s just you and the world outside is just a blur.
With “Too Involved,” the track is more on the slower and healing side, as the emotional vocals and chill acoustic guitar highlight the beauty of simple melodies on this track. This is honestly one of my favorite tracks on this release, as it gives off this warmth through its lyrical contents—it is soothing, it is peaceful—this is basically the whole essence of this whole collection.
Now with “Lost With You,” the track gives off the vibe just like the classic track “Wherever You Will Go” by the iconic band, The Calling. Maybe it’s because of its opening chords, or maybe because of the meaning of this song, but the soothing vocals singing meaningful lyrics dedicated to someone special really hit a home run for this track—you just have to experience it firsthand. The tracks “Low and High,” “I Suppose,” “Home,” “Good One,” and “Owl” were also featured in this collection, and these tracks feature the same through-provoking lyrics and great arrangements just like every track in this album.
Ultimately, Never Heavy’s second album, “Never Heavy is One Full of Light,” is one great release as it bears depth, well-written stories, and messages, as well as sounds and performances that evoke nostalgia. There is no denying that Steve Alex has dropped one great album once again loaded with his chill, alternative slow rock tracks featuring his clear and evoking vocals. This is a deeply moving collection that could make you appreciate this genre more—it is most definitely a must-listen!
