I have never thought of seeing giant disco balls, influencers taking selfies, and saving the world into one project, and surprise—here’s Steven Hensby Band giving me just that! “Astronomers Aren’t Morning People” is the latest album from this power-packed nine-member Australia-based band known for their VERY danceable music, vast coverage of genres that include ska, soul, funk, world music, and a splash of psychedelia. Power does really come with numbers, as this band features season musicians who frequent the WA festival circuit, and spoiler alert, they’re famous for being fun and exceptional, especially with those big horn sections.
Steve Hensby Band sure is fun, yet they don’t just come to play; “Astronomers Aren’t Morning People” is a fun and imaginative 10-track collection that guarantees you a great experience musically and thematically. This band offers a unique sound that I am afraid not everyone would appreciate since it tends to not sound like those of the mainstream, but I am sure enough that this is undeniably great sounding and high quality.
The album opens with the track “Stop the World” along with its acoustic and nice-sounding introduction. Right off the bat, the band showcases their skills and quality in every element of the track—be it the performance, the vocals, the instrumentation, or the song structure—it all screams top quality. The song has an alternating vibe transitioning from acoustic to rock, to soul, and going back to rock. Following strong is the track “All I Wrapped Up in a Dream,” which absolutely gives off the “QUEEN (band)” energy. I honestly got really excited upon hearing this track; it has a great structure and great vocals too! It started slow with its mellow notes and vocal performance, just like those of Freddie Mercury in the introduction of the song “Don’t Stop Me Now. ”
Another quality that is worth mentioning again for this band is how bop and danceable their music is; some great examples of that are the tracks “Hitch-Hike to Mars” and “Starstruck DJ,” which will definitely make you groove. It all sounds great and is uniquely Steve Hensby Band’s signature sound! The band also perfectly knows how to play with their tempo from fast to slow, making it a whole lot of fun! Female vocals are godly on this collection too! With “Turn Up Your Halo,” the impressive and high-quality vocals of the members of the band go along perfectly with the high-quality instrumentation of the whole track—and the horn section, absolute goodness! “Kiss of Death,” “I Wish I Was a Hat Man,” “Jupiter,” “Neptune (You’re My Baby),” and “I Hear Mercury is Nice This Time of Year” are also featured in this collection, which guarantees to spice up your whole experience through this collection.
Steve Hensby Band is a master of its craft, as showcased by its high-quality production, which is balanced and allows every element and instrument to shine through. The amount of attention that is given to this album is prominent in each song’s structure, making the whole collection impeccable. Truly indeed, this album is an interstellar experience for the listeners—it is fun, it is lively, and I daresay, it is a mix that you wouldn’t want to miss.
