You’ll immediately know when a band isn’t in the scene to play safe. They arrive in ripped denim, loud guitars, messy hair, with a whole swagger that makes subtlety feel overrated. Kings County brings that exact energy in their latest single, The Dead of Night.
The muscular sound of ‘90s hard rock arrives from the moment the guitars and drums kick in. It was bold, definitely not holding anything back. Then come the vocals with a rough, throaty delivery that carries just as much attitude as the instrumentation. There’s more to the track than its volume, though, as the chorus rolls in with a catchiness that balances its aggression.
Their lyricism also proves it’s not all sheer volume. They have woven an intriguing narrative around obsession and infatuation in a way that feels messy and consuming. If there’s one thing Kings County gets right, it’s knowing that a rock song can be rough and gritty without losing its depth and ability to make the chorus stick.
Behind this is a five-piece, Orlando-based rock band whose influences range from The Beatles and ’70s rock supergroups. And perhaps that’s where their knack for pairing big melodies and solid songwriting comes from. Whatever the case is, it’s good to know that The Dead of Night is a pretty good case of why there’s still plenty of life left in good old-fashioned rock and roll.
