There’s No Room For Apathy In OpCritical’s “Act Up”

Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable. It feels like OpCritical lives by this very principle, placing it at the heart of their creative compass. Their latest single, Act Up, brings that conviction to the forefront, taking aim at indifference through punk and rock sensibilities.

The gritty guitars and punchy drum hits immediately prove a point: they’re not here to be nice.  It almost feels like a sin to look away, as if the noise itself demands you to lean closer. There’s also a sudden tempo change throughout the track, keeping things from becoming too predictable to keep your attention.

The lyrics come in like a punch in the gut, and it’s honestly what gives the track a real edge. The line, “it’s time to wake up and make some noise,” hits particularly hard because it calls out a familiar tendency of people to turn a blind eye until something becomes impossible to ignore.

Once in a while, there come songs like this that aren’t all about emotions and personal struggles. OpCritical asks you to question, reconsider, and stand up outside our own little bubble. After all, being aware of what’s wrong is only half the battle. The other half is deciding what we’re willing to do about it. And perhaps, it’s the kind of reminder we need from artists every now and then: that music doesn’t always have to offer comfort, it should also make enough noise that its message doesn’t simply go in one ear and out the other.
