Apparitions is an impressive collection. Not only does it carry deep and relatable messages, but all these are expressed through enjoyable and bop sounds. While it carries heavy themes such as self-doubts, mental health struggles, and resiliency of a person, this album sure knows how to keep things in a groovy and funky state while maintaining its haunting vibe. Opening strong is the track “In the Mirror,” a slow, funky track that sets the haunting yet groovy tone of the whole collection. It is honestly a surprising track because you wouldn’t expect a clear fiery rap delivery on that type of sound, but sure, it does work. It perfectly captures the dark and somber thoughts of a person struggling with personal doubts while being balanced by beats and funky synths throughout the track—the struggle of a person who does not like the person that they are—a theme that most of us would appreciate because of its relatability, a sure-fire start of a collection.
The title track, “Apparitions,” serves as the core of the collection and is a personal favorite and standout amongst all the tracks in this collection, without a doubt. This song has a nice buildup brought by the quiet and haunting guitar riff that plays along as the backdrop of this track. The track yet again follows the line of themes that involve struggles such as self-hatred, depression, and the use of substances to dull the feeling. The artist had the uncanny ability to convert the very idea of these emotions into personal demons, a kind of “apparitions” that a person constantly fights. This track is all too real, a groovy and enjoyable sound carrying a familiar story that a lot of us suffered with.
With “Dice Roll,” the album picks up its pace; it goes back to the upbeat and funky vibe of the collection, bringing back the enjoyable and catchy basslines as the artist delivers and throws each rap line clearly and with great precision. This track captures the idea of taking chances in life—do you take a risk, do you go all in, or are you going to skip a turn? Life is unpredictable, and through this track, the idea of life being unpredictable and the choices all being way too hard to pick has been perfectly packed into the track. This song is a bop, and once you give it a listen, it’s impossible to deny this claim.
We’re now entering the “cool” side of the project with tracks “Tango” and “We Gon’ Be Just Fine.” These tracks carry an undeniable swagger brought by their unique groove and rhythm, adding a cool quality to the collection. “Tango” is the kind of track that would make your head bop along because of the confidence and character that it oozes. On the other hand, “We Gon’ Be Just Fine” carries a more serious message of having to deal with a raging war in society but eventually is a form of reassurance that there’s always hope if you believe everything is going to be okay. These tracks are both funky and smooth, the kind of songs that would pull you out on your darkest reverie, delivering the message of hope and cool-headedness in situations.
