“Who Said That?” By Yaz Is For Every Woman Who Wants It All

The best empowerment songs don’t always come with soft beats and gentle reminders. Sometimes, it sounds like heels on a concrete floor and a woman who knows exactly where she’s going—that is Yaz on her latest single, Who Said That?

Bay Area artist Yaz is back, and she further amplifies what it means to be a mother, entrepreneur, and musician without having to choose just one. On Who Said That? she turns that message into an unapologetic anthem for women who simply want it all.

For an opening, a line like “I don’t do the humble brag, I just brag,” is such a wonderfully blunt mission statement. You’d get no disclaimer, no attempt to make things digestible, as if she knows exactly what she brings to the table and everyone’s going to hear about it. The production carries her confidence so well. The beats are giving her plenty of room to tell her story, while her flow and delivery make every line sound like a statement rather than lyrics.

Putting accomplishments into a song is one thing, but making them feel empowering is another. And it’s probably why Who Said That? is such a standout. This is Yaz in her element, all for women who are tired of being told to play small. Here, confidence isn’t something that needs to be toned down; it’s the whole point.
