Du Malai is back, and we are so excited about it! This time, this artist is back with even more great-sounding songs and more meaningful stories to tell with his latest EP, Stories in the Sky. Dropping this 29th of January, this four-track collection connects Du Malai to his roots with the prominent use of Hausa while telling relatable stories through his usual groovy R&B and rhythms, making this whole comeback exciting and with a clear sense of purpose!
The whole EP opens with a banger track, “Thief of the Night,” that gives off the magical vibe from the famous film Aladdin. It’s a personal opinion, but sure enough, this track feels playful yet very colorful, maybe because of the way this track has subtle Arabian influences that transport you to experience other worlds. We’re on for a great start for sure—it is an earworm, and the repetitive groove would definitely stick with you. Not only is it a fun track, but it is also empowering. This track is about embracing your power and trusting your own light—our inner demons will always be there, but Du Malai would like to emphasize that we should rise and step into action and welcome our own strength. A banger for an opening, indeed!
“Feels” comes in with a wow because, for the lack of better words to describe it, “it is an absolute mood.”. I think this track is something special with the way Du Malai infused his warmth and vibe in this track—it is absolutely danceable! It carries this particular groove that would make your head bop and a sound that would make energy course through your body! It is such an empowering song that would remind you to stay true to yourself! Do not cast doubts on yourself, making your light dim in the process; embrace yourself as well as every emotion you feel to shine through all your problems.
With “She Divine,” Du Malai shows off his vocals and emotional range as he takes us into a deeper depth for this release. Fiery is what I describe this track as, and fire is what you can sense in his voice as he delivers lines about love and how timeless it is. On the other hand, “Here Comes the Sun” closes the whole collection in a hopeful tone. This is my personal favorite because it gives off a hopeful vibe. I love how this track is not only infectious with energy because of the beats and synths that it carries but also in the sense that it reminds you that you can rise after everything that you have gone through in life. With the artist’s gritty delivery, you can’t help but feel the push to keep going as you feel his energy in his song! This is a great ending for this one helluva collection.
There’s no denying that with “Stories from the Sky,” Du Malai’s growth as an artist is apparent in the open. Each track reflects his desire, and I applaud him for being one of those artists who isn’t afraid to bear his heart and soul to his listeners. He had laid a solid foundation from his previous projects, and with this EP, he was more potent—the collection was great-sounding, fun, well-executed, and well-written!
