Magenta Ray could easily settle for being another guitar-driven rock band. But they chose something darker, stranger, and far more seductive. And their best showcase to date is probably A Kiss Like This, a dark-wave infused alternative rock track that feels like Garbage and Portishead meeting for a smoke behind the venue.
The bass pulses like the kind of heartbeat you get when you’re about to do something for the plot. And then it builds up to a chorus where fuzz and rhythm crash into each other, until the tension has nowhere left to go but into you. As every layer of the track leans into a slinking groove, the vocals let you slip further into trouble until “give me a kiss” feels like the only reasonable thing to do.
What makes this track bolder isn’t just what Magenta Ray does with the sound, but how effortlessly they attempt to pull off this concept without sounding excessive or trying hard. Overall, A Kiss Like This is everything that happens in the seconds before it: the staring, the heat, the hesitation, and that dangerous little feeling of knowing exactly where it is going.
