Darkness, Synths, and Disco Beats: Moonshot Brings Back 80s Vibes With ‘Angels Wear Black’

You know that an album slaps when its tracks pull you into a different world, and that’s exactly what Moonshot does with its recently dropped collection called “Angles Wear Black”. It is a 10-track collection packed with the familiar 80s vibe that some of us crave, and to put it into perspective, it’s as if listening to Depeche Mode combined with a dose from Massive Attack, only that the songs were groovy and the lyrics are deep—making you fully listen and think.

Angels Wear Black leans on the darker side in terms of the vibe that it carries. This is apparent from the first track, “Down to the Sea.” As its opening notes and effects come in, it’s as if the room changes—it becomes serious and potent with electrifying energy brought by the mix of disco beats, synths, and the eerie delivery from their skilled vocalist. Following this is the title track, “Angels Wear Black,” which is a total earworm because of its infectious beats and lyrics that slap without so much effort. The words are simple, and the structure is neat, making the whole storytelling for this track easy, relatable, and understandable. “If everything here happens for a reason, if everyone needs something to believe in.” This line definitely sticks for a while inside your head.

Now comes my personal favorite, “Sabotage,” with its undeniable hook. The hauntingly beautiful piano notes in the background have definitely got me, and those layered female vocals that come and go—it’s a perfect addition that adds drama to this track. On the other hand, Mercury (Down and Dirty Mix) is something that carries a much more melodic touch on this whole collection. Here, the vocalist showcased their clear and emotional vocals, without the usual robotic or synth effects, and their raw voice definitely is strong, and it hits a totally different vibe from the usual on this project.

Finally, the album closes with this 7-minute goodness, “United States of Earth,” featuring another amazing singer, Clare Portman. This one honestly gives off the vibe that it could be a potential OST of a sci-fi movie, specifically those post-apocalyptic-action-drama types of productions. This song would sum up the plot with its intensity that builds up until the climax, and not only does it carry an intense dark vibe, but with the addition of Clare’s voice in the equation, the song also becomes emotional and dramatic. What a perfect way to end the album! Want to hear more? Here are some other tracks included in the collection: “Your Blue Eyes Are Wasted (On Me),” “Puppet King,” “The Day I Learned to Stand Still,” “Change Has Come to Stay,” and “Cope.” All are produced with the same finesse, all are of great quality, and everything deserves your full attention and listening, so be sure to give it some love too!

Moonshot does know their style and their way around the soundboard and their instruments; that’s a surefire fact. The production is clearly done in a great manner—the synths are great, the beats are tight, and the layers and all other elements on each track feel intentional. While Angels Wear Black does give off the vibe from 80s and 90s electronic rock music, the band has managed to give it a fresh and modern twist! Needless to say, the vocals and instrumentation are also top-notch, and the precise and clear delivery of each line is something that I personally really appreciate.
