SPELLS AND SECRETS by SEER SEEKER (Album Review)

SEER SEEKER really said “Spells and secrets, I guess I’ll share them” with this album. It’s a combination of rap, alternative, hip-hop, synth, not to mention the concept behind this entire record, and we’re here for it.

With ten songs, it really leaves us to use and resonate with them in any way we want, in a sense that you could heavily analyze what it all means, or just straight up jam to it during a night ride or out at a club. This might be a case by case basis, but the former is what most tend to overlook in a rap album; does it really mean anything? Well, in SEER SEEKER’s case, yes.

“DIVINE LOVE (INTRO)” starts the album well. Catchy yet simple, but it exceeds expectations as a track labeled as an introduction. Both “SPELLS AND SECRETS (PT. 1)” and “SPELLS AND SECRETS (PT. 2)” are pretty self-explanatory, but they do kind of divide the tracks in a way. For instance, upon listening to “BURN” and “CHECKMATE” for the first time, the first thought that pops to mind is they take edginess to a whole nother level. It’s dark, angry in a way, and it connects both tracks by the transition between them.

Now that it’s been brought up, SEER SEEKER’s in-between, smooth transitions from one track to another. They’re fitting, and add sleekness and speak a lot of what they know about their craft and how to make the best versions of each and every one of them.

“FRACTALS”, acting more as the first official song than the first two, opens with a steady beat soon accompanied with sick (the cool kind) and clear-as-day vocals. It is definitely going to get you bobbing your head because it is just that catchy. “THE WINTERS” is such a good one, lyrically and rhythmically, plus it’s brought to the table by a transition from the previous track. It plays with rhymes, “winter” and “winner”, the seasons, and “All play and no work makes Jack a weak man”.

As mentioned, after the second part of the self-titled track, it’s “NO SNAKES” time to grace your ears. Being the longest track of the album, it does not miss when it comes to maintaining the overall vibe and the narrative-like rapping. It transitions to “NO PARADIGM”, a personal favorite. Not only does it fit perfectly by making the listener feel as if they’ve cohesively gone through the record’s concept, it offers a nod to the whole spells and secrets concept. Plus, it’s somewhat inspirational with lyrics like “I will prevail, I cannot die”, and “I finally made it, I can take you up to paradise” making the listeners feel like they’re up there with them.

The last track “NATURE OF REALITY” sums up everything. It quite literally backtracks to the darkness felt within and claims to fight against it, as per the lyrics “All the nights that I try to stay sober, I keep on fighting ’till the soul takes over” which has an amazing delivery, setting the tone for the end of the record.

Concept albums are treasures waiting to be found within the world of music. “SPELLS AND SECRETS”, along with SEER SEEKER’s other works, are one of them. You can really sense the passion and the creativity by merging different elements and genres, as well as their influences.
