Caution: You are about to hear some great heavy metal!! San Francisco Bay Area-based metal band Wroht drops their latest album, “Dissolution,” an 8-track collection loaded with the band’s unfiltered take on themes of despair, trauma, loss, madness, and addiction. This is a showcase of craft and a feature of their character through intense thunderous drums, potent vocals, and authentic and accurate representations of stories that are hidden directly in the darkest corners of your mind.
Wroht’s power is undeniable—a rising star in the prog metal/heavy metal scene, their music has continuously made a relevant ruckus through their unapologetic intensity and performance brought by members Paul O. on bass, Justin L. and Joey B. on the guitars, Christian K. on the drums, and Ivan P. for the overall vocals and production—one huge line-up for a storm of sound!
“Dissolution” features a classic heavy black metal wall sound accentuated by Ivan’s screams and anguish shouts, torrent drum blasts, trem-picked riffs, and rolling bass throughout the whole collection. These big performances are the backbone of each track, specifically on the opening songs “Blood Prison” and “Degradation.” You see, I have been everywhere in the musical sphere; I know what I like, and I have my preferences, but I’ll always respect dark metal above all. When listening to this genre, it felt like it was soul-cleansing; in a way, it was rejuvenating, and this type of vibe is what these tracks are giving.
The music continues with the track “Beyond Salvation,” an intense track that perfectly encapsulates hopelessness and despair in a song. With the anguish vocal performance and fast-paced instrumentation, the production seemed to reflect the emotional suffering of the protagonist as they fell trapped into their thoughts of everything going downhill. With “Decay’s Embrace,” the band successfully shows the sadness and isolation brought by unjust judgment and condemnation of society toward a person experiencing a situation. The anguished screams captured the essence of being portrayed as an outcast or a monster in a society where you have done relatively nothing bad. Meanwhile, “The Sweet Taste of Venom” explores this familiar issue involving addiction and self-destructive behavior caused by cravings for pleasure, which end up with pain and suffering. The song perfectly captured the themes of hopelessness and self-loathing, angered at being stuck on the cycle of pain and regret caused by the addiction toward desires. This album is packed, I am telling you, but for some other highlights, don’t forget to check out “Cycle of Torment,” “Forged in Fire,” and “Dissolution.”
Ultimately, what I like about this album is how it goes beyond all the expectations that you have—it goes on and on and it doesn’t hold back. From its emotionally packed lyrics—though I wish the band could’ve shared it through the platform—to the crushing riffs and heavy pounding drums, every song on the collection packs a punch and hits hard in its own way. It is a great balance between anguish and story, a great album that is not just good-sounding but also relatable and thought-provoking. Each song is a record of struggle, making it both personal to the singers and resonant to the listeners. “Dissolution” by Wroht is an absolute golden addition to add to your playlist!
