He writes music that is catchy and pleasing to a wide audience while staying true to his jazz, R&B, and soul roots, giving him a writing style that mixes 2024 with the great music of the 20th century. While jazz can sometimes be too complex for modern listeners, his writing captures its feel-good elements and rich instrumentation. For example, in the track “Juice,” he uses a standard jazz combo group instrumentation: sax, keys, drums, and bass.
With this, he honed his skills, but he has yet to fulfill his deepest yearning to make music to connect more with people. After many years of preparation, “TYPEWRITER” is born out of his evolution as an artist. This album is set to cement his identity as an artist in the music industry.
Bernell does everything; he was the writer, arranger, and orchestrator of this whole album. As you listen to each of the thirteen tracks featured on this album, you will know how skilled and passionate this artist is about his music. “Baby Mama [Intro]” is the track that introduces this whole album. This track has perfectly captured the whole essence and vibe of “TYPEWRITER”. It is jazzy, it is chill, and it is nice to listen to. “Don’t Know Why” is the lead single on this album. Written by Jazmine James, this song is about heartbreak. Its honest expression of emotions, as highlighted by the way the lyrics were simply written, is commendable. The way this track was performed was top-notch too. The voice is clear, and it’s clearly sensual. This track was also intensified by the great instrumentation of Bernell. Along with these tracks are “Brand New” and “You = Me,” which were all performed by the same artists. Just like the other tracks, these were jazzy and slow. A chill, sexy track to spice up your listens!
Following these tracks are the great sounds brought by Bernell’s artistry. “Fast ish” is a track that features the skillful saxophone of the artist. This track has a vibe that would make you want to dance. Not the type that you will hear in loud clubs, but the type that you’ll hear in nice and fun pubs! “July 25th” follows this vibe too; it is slow and chill. “Juice” features a nice spiraling sound, which sets it apart from the other features, while “Kat” features cool vocalizations in addition to its backtracks and cool bass riffs.
A total change of mood is brought about by the track “Properly Labeled Fun.” This track comes off as jazzy and funky at the same time. This track is an absolute bop! I daresay, this is a personal favorite, along with the last track, “Gym Rat ” which is a cool sound with helluva dirty beats and bass, which has a refreshing addition of smooth sax and cool rhythm plays. What a way to end the whole album!
